Senior Programmer

The Senior Programmer is responsible for the design, development, maintenance and technical support of the Company’s software applications. The position provides senior-level technical leadership to Programmer Analysts and Programmers, including code review, troubleshooting, mentoring and guidance, while ensuring that applications are developed and maintained in accordance with MSD’s standards, business requirements and established software engineering practices.

Primary Job Functions

1. Provides technical supervision and guidance to Programmer Analysts and Programmers and assists with complex programming and application-related issues.
2. Designs, develops, codes, tests, debugs, implements and maintains the Company’s desktop, web and related software applications.
3. Works at a senior technical level across all phases of programming and applies strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills to complex development requirements.
4. Reviews source code and completed programs prior to implementation to ensure consistency and compliance with departmental standards, specifications, policies and accepted software engineering practices.
5. Performs acceptance testing, debugging and implementation activities for assigned applications, systems and projects.
6. Conducts detailed analysis of technical, system and application problems; documents findings and recommends appropriate solutions.
7. Troubleshoots complex application and programming issues, including legacy C/C++ applications, and implements appropriate corrective solutions.
8. Provides technical guidance, coaching and mentoring to junior and intermediate programmers and assists in developing understudy and succession capacity within the Development Team.
9. Works closely with other members of the Development Team to ensure assigned software deliverables are completed within agreed scope, quality standards and timelines.
10. Maintains appropriate technical documentation for software development, modifications, testing and implementation activities.
11. Keeps the Vice President – Software Development regularly informed of the status of assigned projects, development activities, technical issues and identified risks.
12. Researches and recommends appropriate technologies, development practices and improvements that can enhance the Company’s applications and software development processes.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Vice President – Software Development.

Educational & Experience Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline. A postgraduate qualification or equivalent advanced technical certification would be an asset.
• Minimum 5 years’ relevant software development experience, preferably including experience in a senior programming or technical lead capacity.
• Experience developing and supporting large-scale, database-driven or enterprise software applications.
• Strong programming knowledge and practical experience in C and C++, with additional experience in HTML, JavaScript and PHP.
• Experience working with relational databases and enterprise-level applications.
• Experience supporting and maintaining legacy applications and source code.
• Knowledge and experience with FinTech Software would be an asset.
